Haj Hassan named female athlete of the week
Razan Haj Hassan stepped up big with the season on the line.
The third-year middle recorded 25 kills and 13 blocks as the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges beat the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers twice to stay alive in the women's volleyball playoff race.
Haj Hassan is the MCAC female athlete of the week.
"Razan is such a force every weekend and these past two games were no exception. She has the ability to take over a match on offence and on defence. She is so dependable for our team, and we knew she would show up when we needed her most," said Les Rouges coach Evan Turenne.
"She finds ways to score even in situations where the other team prioritizes trying to stop her. Her 10 blocks in a game is a career high and she showed great leadership as a team captain when her team needed her most."
USB's back-to-back 3-2 wins created a three-way tie for second place at 7-9, while the Assiniboine College Cougars swept the Providence University College Pilots on the weekend to sit 11-5 and secure first place.
The other three face each other this weekend and can all finish anywhere from second to fourth.
