Les Rouges complete MCAC women's futsal five-peat
New team, same dream complete.
The Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges women's futsal team, with as much roster turnover as anyone in the MCAC, completed a remarkable five-peat on Sunday with a 5-4 victory over the host Brandon University Bobcats in the championship game.
"It feels so awesome. As a first-year, I'm just so proud to be a part of it. It feels amazing," said player of the game Mattea Lussier-Bullaro.
"It was a really fun game to play. Both sides were going super hard and I respect game for game. It was a really fun game to play but I'm really, really glad we came out on top."
Lussier-Bullaro scored two big goals for Les Rouges, who beat the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers 7-2 in the semifinals on Saturday.
Her first was a free kick from half court, blistered into the top right corner after BU went ahead 2-0 on quality finishes by Ashley Robinson and Emilie Dornez.
Sydney Rudnicki jumped on a loose ball and found the net to tie it up, and soon after, Pia Bokingkito put Brandon back up 3-2 at halftime.
"We looked at each other and just wanted it bad," Lussier-Bullaro said.
"It was time to go. We needed to come out and play strong and we left everything out there."
Les Rouges came back with three unanswered goals, two by final four MVP Marlene Zarychta on a penalty kick and a free kick.
Dornez made a perfect lofted pass to Tarin Ballan at the far post to make it 5-4, but player of the year goalkeeper Alexi Gagnon and Les Rouges defence locked down and kept the ball out of the net for the last 10 minutes.
"They just really stuck hard on their opposition," Lussier-Bullaro said. "We tried hard to keep the ball away from our keeper and that's all you can do in these circumstances."
