Gagnon named MCAC women's futsal player of the year

Alexi Gagnon knew she'd have to step up for a young team. After a big year of roster turnover, the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges goalkeeper did just that, leading the defending champs to a 6-0-2 record and the top seed.

Gagnon is the MCAC women's futsal player of the year.

"Alexi is an undeniable force within the MCAC. Her presence on the court is well known, and coupled with her shot-stopping ability she continues to be a leader on our team game after game," said USB coach Tonya Derkson. "She is a remarkable player and a great teammate."

Les Rouges started with four narrow games, winning three by a combined four goals and drawing one. In the second half of the season, they allowed just six goals as they earned the top seed and a semifinal matchup against Canadian Mennonite University at Brandon University on Saturday.

Providence University College and BU meet in the other semifinal.
