Derkson named MCAC women's futsal coach of the year
Tonya Derkson has kept the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges futsal dynasty rolling seamlessly. The veteran coach in her first season at the helm of the program, led Les Rouges to an unbeaten regular season at 6-0-2.
Derkson is the MCAC women's futsal coach of the year.
"Tonya has had an extraordinary year navigating a unique situation with her team. She is always present with the athletes, motivating them to play the game with respect and reach their highest potential," said USB athletic director Zoe Savoie. "You can tell she's continuously trying to translate her love for the sport to the athletes on her team, which is at the forefront of all she does as a coach."
Les Rouges lost multiple players due to ineligibility during the soccer season and started the futsal season without a full starting lineup of players with significant experience. Still, Derkson led them to win or tie all eight games and take the top seed for the playoffs. They play the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers in the semifinals on Saturday at Brandon University.
"The team is incredibly fortunate to have a coach as experienced and dedicated as Tonya," said USB captain Marlene Zarychta. "Her knowledge of the game is undeniable but it is her dedication, enthusiasm and passion that truly make her stand out as a coach. "I am incredibly grateful to have Tonya as my mentor."
