Ashfield named men's volleyball coach of the year
The Assiniboine College Cougars turned a rebuilding year into one of their most competitive seasons yet.
Second-year head coach Dan Ashfield had a key role to play in it.
Ashfield is the MCAC men's volleyball coach of the year.
"Dan was able to take the men's program another step forward this season, exceeding expectations and accomplishing milestones along the way. The Cougars found themselves in the CCAA rankings for the first time in program history with many players sitting atop MCAC stat leaderboards," said Cougars athletics manager Lindsay McLaughlin.
"He has created a culture around resiliency and passion for the sport, which the athletes have fully embraced. The program is in good hands and the accolades are well deserved."
The Cougars went 9-9, but were just a few points away from a few late wins that would have pushed them to a top-two seed in a season after they lost a handful of key players.
AC fell 3-0 to Canadian Mennonite University in the semifinal last week. The Blazers take on the host Providence University College Pilots in the final series on Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and if necessary, Sunday at 2 p.m.
The winner heads to CCAA nationals in Edmonton.
The all-conference team, player of the year and rookie of the year will be announced on Thursday.
