Vanden Berg named male athlete of the week
Jesse Vanden Berg wants to stay home for the playoffs, and his Providence University College Pilots are now a win away from getting their wish.
Vanden Berg compiled 28 kills during two key wins over the Assiniboine College Cougars, moving into solo first in the men's volleyball standings.
Vanden Berg is the MCAC male athlete of the week.
"Jesse has been making great improvements as a first-year, through his strong work ethic, desire for excellence, and ability to focus," said Pilots coach Paul Armbruster. "Vandy has been a great teammate and brought a ton of energy to our team with his competitiveness and joyfulness. I have been blessed by his growing Leadership skills and how much of a gamer he is."
Vanden Berg recorded 14 kills each game, adding four aces and six digs on the weekend. He hit .570 Friday night and .340 on Saturday.
The Pilots are now 11-5, one win ahead of the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers (10-6) and two ahead of the Cougars (9-7).
PUC can clinch first with a win over the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges this Friday.
