Blazers win MCAC men's soccer final in extra time
It took two challenging hours, but the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers are back on top of MCAC men's soccer.
CMU defeated Brandon University 2-1 in extra time in the championship game at the Healthy Living Centre on Sunday.
"Thank you to God for bringing us together as a team, because without Him, we would not be able to achieve this. We prayed about it, we studied the game, we played with heart this season," said final four MVP Taiwo Oshode.
"This has been our toughest place to play at. We lost 6-0 after getting ranked nationally, 2-0 as well, our two losses."
The Blazers weren't the only ones who struggled at BU's home. The Bobcats won seven games in a row on their pitch, including a 2-0 semifinal over Providence University College in Saturday's semifinals.
The Blazers defeated the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges 2-1 in the other semifinal.
Oshode scored the first goal of the final, but not until the second half.
All-conference midfielder Matheus Ruffini tied the game later, forcing an extra 30 minutes.
Rookie of the year Nicholas Pavao took advantage of a golden opportunity from the penalty spot to score the winner in the 115th minute.
"We wanted to play with heart. We wanted to play like we believed from the jump. We did a little bit of tactics with the set pieces, and that really helped us today," Oshode said.
The Blazers are headed to Saint-Lambert, Quebec, for CCAA nationals on Nov. 5-8.
