Les Rouges defend men's fustsal title
Hamed Awal Njoya turned a great game into an incredible one with one last perfect strike.
The Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges striker completed his hat trick in extra time to defeat the Assiniboine College Cougars 4-3 at AC on Sunday.
"He was amazing. He basically won the game for us, couldn't ask for anything more," said captain Randy Gborie of Njoya.
"We have a completely different group than we did in the outdoor season and we knew we had to put all the pieces together. The way to be even better after winning is to do it again. We knew it'd be hard but we knew we'd get it done."
Les Rouges made it through the entire 2024-25 season without losing in Manitoba, drawing three soccer games and one futsal match en route to both championships.
Both teams survived exciting 7-6 semifinals as Les Rouges beat the Brandon University Bobcats and the Cougars edged the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers on Saturday.
Les Rouges struck first but the Cougars tied it a minute later to set the stage for an exciting game.
Gborie helped USB pull ahead 3-1 in the second half, but Danylo Denysevych cut the lead in half from the penalty spot.
Denysevych tied it on a rocket from his own half with less than 10 minutes to go.
The rest of the game and first five minutes of extra time solved nothing, until Njoya netted the winner with three minutes to go in the second extra frame.
"It was tight, it was stressful but I never lost my confidence," Gborie said. "I knew we'd pull it out."
