Les Rouges claim MCAC men's futsal title
Derrick Yappi figured out how to top a two-goal performance in the MCAC men's futsal semifinals — a hat trick in the gold-medal game.
The Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges rookie took over final four weekend and led his team to a 5-2 win over the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers to secure the title on Saturday at Brandon University.
"We prepared ourselves very well for this weekend," said Yappi, the final four MVP. "That was very, very exciting and very, very very good for our team.
"All the pride goes to the coach because he told us we had to come out very fast and play very well and try to score. That's what we did."
Yappi struck first five minutes into the game and doubled the lead before Matheus Moreno got CMU on the board before halftime.
Early in the second half, Blazers keeper Noah Schindel made an incredible diving save but dislocated his shoulder in the process and left the game.
Les Rouges took advantage as Amine Mrabet, Yappi and Randy Gborie found the net while all-conference Blazer Victor Hugo scored once for CMU.
While Les Rouges brought a potent attack, netting nine goals on the weekend including their 4-1 win over Providence University College, Yappi credits the guys at the back, including player of the game Mehdi Fizazi in goal.
"It's our defence," Yappi said. "Our keeper as well, that's a very, very, very good keeper. He gave all that he has and we are proud of him."
