Bobcats Samuel Wetstein - MCAC Athlete of the Week for week ending Feb. 19, 2023

A nail biter of a finish ended with another championship and quite the send off for his career. Third year midfielder Samuel Wetstein was selected as Championship MVP as the #1 seed Brandon University (BU) Bobcats defended their title and finished off an season without a loss with a second consecutive Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) Men's Futsal Championship title in front of a loud, packed Loewen Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

Brandon (7-1-0 in the regular season; 2-0 playoffs) remained the champs with a thrilling and close 8-7 overtime win over the #2 seed Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges on Sunday, February 19.

With the result, Brandon's added a third program title (2019, 2022 and now 2023) and became first MCAC men's futsal team to win back-to-back conference titles.

Wetstein was the hero in the exciting finale as he scored twice (both in overtime) but more importantly the game-winning goal with only 45 seconds left in the second session of overtime to secure the win. The team captain also added a goal in the semi final match when BU won 8-1 over #4 seed Assiniboine Community College (ACC) Cougars on Sat., Feb. 18.

"We lost some guys from last year's team and Sam stepped up with the other veterans during this season to lead this team," stated BU's head coach Glen McNabb. "For Sam to score the game winner  in his final MCAC game showed what he is made of and the heart and soul of the whole team."

This also completed an award winning season for the Cartwright, MB native as he was also named as 2023 MCAC Men's Futsal All Conference selection plus 2022 MCAC Men's Soccer All Conference selection.
