CCAA approves MCAC basketball and cross-country for nationals
The Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference has made another step forward, this time on the basketball court.
The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association has granted MCAC basketball a spot at both the women's and men's national championships beginning in the 2027-28 season.
In addition, qualifiers from the new cross-country season will be eligible for nationals in the fall of 2026.
"This is an incredible step in the right direction for MCAC basketball. Joining the CCAA gives us the chance to join a dynamic and highly competitive league with quality programs and athletes all around the country. The long-anticipated return of Red River College Polytech to the league makes this dream a reality for all of our programs," said basketball convenor Pierre Dubreuil.
"For the last few years, we observed the positive impact of joining the CCAA on our volleyball and soccer programs, how athletes are levelling up their talents to the rest of the nation and fighting to get to nationals. The opportunity to follow the same pathway for basketball is an exciting new challenge, and we can't wait to display the quality of players and coaches Manitoba has to offer."
With RRC Polytech's return to the conference, steps have been taken to demonstrate its commitment to the CCAA.
Canadian Mennonite University, Providence University College and the Université de Saint-Boniface have stepped away from the Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
In turn, the league schedule of eight games has been increased to 18, with teams playing each other six times.
The league has also switched to the Molten basketball used across the CCAA, and will prioritize games against other member schools when building exhibition schedules.
The MCAC's return to a four-team basketball league begins on Nov. 6 as RRC hosts CMU and PUC visits USB.
All four teams will compete in the playoffs this year, featuring single-elimination semifinals and a best-of-three final, with the highest remaining seed earning two home games.
