Brandon wins 2023 MCAC women's soccer title

Tarin Ballan had a new old job to do and executed to near perfection.
The Brandon University Bobcat shifted back to centre-back due to an injury and led her team to the 2023 MCAC women's soccer title on Tuesday, beating the Providence University College Pilots 2-1.
Ballan was named final four MVP for her efforts.
"It's amazing because you don't get as much recognition at the back but it was nice to know I got chosen for that," Ballan said.
The Pilots struck first when Serena Negrich got her head on a corner kick and powered the ball into the back of the net late in the first half.
The Bobcats felt in control of most of the game to that point. Midfielder Mackenzie Boyes said her team didn't worry about half-time adjustments.
"I don't think we changed much, we just started to want it more. We started going harder and realized 'this is for nationals,' what we worked our whole season to go to," Boyes said.
The rookie, who was her team's player of the game in a 5-1 win over Canadian Mennonite University on Monday, sparked the Bobcats with a remarkable cross attempt turned goal from the right side of the net close to the goal line.
Kenadie Janzen put Brandon ahead four minutes later on a shot from outside the penalty area.
Then it was up to Ballan and the defensive unit to do their job.
PUC player of the game Laurianne Chiasson served a lot of quality long balls and corner kicks but the BU defence dealt with each one.
"We knew their entire tactic of the game was trying to get corner kicks," Ballan said. "They get most of their goals off corners. Our goal was to play it wide, play our game, pass around and that was what we were practising for.
The Bobcats held on and punched their ticket to CCAA nationals on Nov. 8-11 in Summerside, P.E.I.
Brandon plays the Champlain Cavaliers of the RSEQ in the quarterfinals.
