Sebastian Verdaguer, Volleyball
A weekend sweep by Providence University College (PUC) Pilots during week five of the 2022-23 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) men’s volleyball season showcased a standout performance by first year middle Sebastian Verdaguer.
The Melbourne, Australia native notched 23 kills on .617 hitting percentage with six digs, four blocks plus 27 points in only six sets while playing the middle position versus Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges.
To start the weekend, Verdaguer had a match-high in kills with 12 and points at 15 along with three blocks and a dig in a three setter home win. On Sat., Nov. 26 matinee, he continued with match-highs in kills (11) and points (12) plus five digs in another three set victory as the squad dealt with a short roster due to illness during the two matches.
PUC’s head coach Cody Quiring commented, “It’s hard for middle blockers to be recognized on a weekly basis, just based off sheer distribution numbers. But Seb has taken his game to another level, enabling the team to find success from all parts of the floor and allowed for more offensive systems to be run. Seb is putting up regular offensive numbers in which an outside hitter would but as a middle hitter.”
The Pilots are on a three match win streak and only one match back of the defending champ Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers in the MCAC standings as they hold a 6-2 record.
PUC and the Health Sciences student-athlete return to the court as they are on the road against CMU on Friday, December 2 at 6 p.m. CT to end the first half of play.
