Kalvin Mendez is the MCAC Male Athlete of the Week

Blazers’ point guard Kalvin Mendez scored 20-plus points in both games of a weekend series split with the PUC Pilots — a preview of the MCAC semi-final.

Mendez scored 29 points, grabbed five rebounds and set up baskets with four assists in CMU’s 107-88 win on Saturday.

The Blazers lost the first game on Friday by a score of 110-87, but Mendez still managed to put up solid numbers. He netted 21 points, had five boards and four assists — Mendez converted all eight of his free throws in the game too.

“Kalvin brings energy and excitement to the floor,” said Blazers head coach Scott Martin. “He is able to create and get us into our offense.”

Martin said even though Mendez is a first-year player, he’s been a leader on and off the court.

Mendez is taking courses in the arts program at CMU.

The Blazers sit at a 4-8 record and have won three of their last four games and will look to carry momentum into MCAC championship weekend. They will play the PUC Pilots in the semi-final match on Thursday, Feb. 13. with the winner taking on the undefeated RRC Rebels in the championship game.

Aidan Beckingham is the MCAC Male Athlete of the Week

Veteran defender scored a hat-trick in team’s 6-3 win on Saturday

Fifth-year defender Aidan Beckingham scored a hat-trick in CMU’s 6-3 win over the RRC Rebels on Saturday.

The veteran leader scored his goals at critical moments in the match, to keep CMU in front and ultimately win the game.

“He was also a really positive player on and off the court, helping his teammates to get organized and bring home another win for us,” said Blazers head Anderson Pereira.

Beckingham’s play was of no surprise to his coach — he has been a consistent player throughout his MCAC career.

“Aidan’s powerful and accurate shots, combined with his intelligence and understanding of the game makes him one of the top players in the conference,” said Pereira.

Beckingham is in his final year of eligibility at the college sports level and is enrolled in the arts program at CMU.

The Blazers travel to faceoff with the PUC Pilots on Friday, January 24.
