Cougars Kendra Mansoff and Bobcats Camilo Rodriguez are the MCAC Athletes of the Week for week ending Sept. 18, 2022

Early in the 2022 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) women’s soccer season, you can see the parity as all five teams have been competitive. Assiniboine Community College (ACC) Cougars began their campaign after a week one bye and had center midfielder Kendra Mansoff lead the way.

After a tough start to the season against last year’s MCAC finalist Brandon University (BU) Bobcats on Sept. 14 at home, the Cougars bounced back with a close 2-1 loss to Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers on the road.

The third year veteran scored on the penalty kick against CMU on Sept. 17 to narrow the lead at the 80 minute mark and assisted on numerous attacks on net and provided senior leadership while defending their own back end. In game one, Mansoff had four shots on goal and was dangerous on taking free kicks to create scoring opportunities during the home opener versus BU.

“Kendra has always been an extremely devoted and passionate player, which was evident in these seasons first few games. I placed Kendra in a central position where she can support her players in all advances and defensive plays, commented Kate Broadhead, ACC’s head coach. “She is effective nearly anywhere on the field, whether taking free kicks, throw-ins, goal kicks or getting physical in the opponent’s end. Kendra understands the game well and has been instrumental in organizing her teammates on and off the field.”

The Cougars next plays in a rematch against Brandon on Wednesday, Sept. 21 and the ACC Medical Administration looks to continue her strong start to this year.

Camilo Rodriguez

Another season and no change in his scoring prowess. Second year forward Camilo Rodriguez was instrumental in leading the Brandon University (BU) Bobcats to two straight wins in week two of the 2022 MCAC men’s soccer season.

Rodriguez scored six of the eight goals by the Bobcats and began with a natural hat trick against Assiniboine Community College (ACC) Cougars on Sept. 14 in a 5-1 victory. The Brandon native scored in the third minute and potted all three goals by the 34th minute.

In the second match of the week, he added another hat trick with one goal in the first half and two more tallies in the second half in a 3-1 home win Providence University College (PUC) Pilots on Sept. 17.

Rodriguez now has eight goals (and five ahead of nearest player) in three games in 2022 and has followed up his rookie season when he notched 14 goals in 2021.

“Camilo’s goal scoring ability is a tremendous asset, but it’s also his passion for the game and drive to make his team better is what makes him a remarkable player,” stated BU’s head coach Glen McNabb.

The Bachelor of Arts student-athlete looks to keep scoring and help Brandon in a tight three-way battle for first place as the play in the rematch at ACC on Sept. 21.
