The 2022 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) women’s futsal season finished in perfection for the number one seed Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges as they captured the conference championship during a busy weekend. Third year forward Sara Boissonneault was a big factor in four wins over two days and was recognized as MCAC Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending Mar. 13, 2022.
The Winnipeg native had an impact on both sides of the ball as Les Rouges played two matches on Saturday, March 12 in the third and final leg of the regular season to determine the playoff seeding positions. She scored once during 6-2 and 5-2 wins before the playoffs. The next day, USB continued their run to a third consecutive title as Boissonneault added a goal in the semi final 6-1 win over Brandon University (BU) Bobcats and followed up with another goal and solid defence in a 8-1 championship final victory over Providence University College (PUC) Pilots on Sunday, March 13.
“What an incredible weekend for our team where I saw every single one of my players shine, filled with many memorable performances that helped us earn our third consecutive futsal championship,” stated USB’s head coach Justin Légaré. “One of those key performances was from Sara Boissonneault who dominated on both ends of the court. Defensively she shut down all opposing offensive threats and offensively she contributed multiple highlight real goals in both the semi final and final.”
This was the second time for the Nursing student-athlete from USB to be named as Athlete of the Week this season. She was also selected in week four for women’s soccer season. USB completed the double this year as the program won both MCAC championship in women’s soccer and futsal in 2021-22.
Légaré continued, “Sara is so talented. When she plays as confident as she was this weekend, Sara is unstoppable! I am really proud of her and how she played in this busy four game weekend. Sara should also be extremely proud of her performances as she definitely helped the team earn those four victories and championship.”
USB finished 2022 with a perfect 4-0-0 regular season record and 2-0 in the playoffs. They have now won conference futsal titles in 2019, 2020 and 2022.
