Les Rouges Sam Lemoine is the MCAC Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending Mar. 6, 2022

The 2021-22 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) women’s volleyball season finished with an exciting final as the number one seed Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges completed their journey to a conference championship. Third year setter Sam Lemoine was a force all weekend as she was recognized as MCAC Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending Mar. 6, 2022.

The Winnipeg native registered 53 assists in a thrilling five set victory over the number three seed Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers in the championship final on Sun., Mar. 6. Lemoine controlled the game especially in the crucial five set to salt away the win. Lemoine was also efficient in the semi final match a day earlier against fourth seed Assiniboine Community College (ACC) Cougars as she distributed the ball to numerous hitters during the 3-0 win to advance to the finals.

Lemoine was named Championship MVP for her performance and exclaimed after the Finals, “What a crazy game! We have gone to the fifth a lot this season and we have been strong in fifth and really knew we could do it.”

With the conference championship, USB wins the conference championship for first time since 2003 and claims their fourth overall title in program’s history (2001, 2002, 2003, 2022). In addition, Les Rouges now advances as the MCAC representative to the 2022 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship hosted by Holland College in Charlottetown, PEI from March 25-27.

‘Sam has put in so much work to improve all aspects of her game. Her performance this season was nothing short of spectacular and she deserves all the recognition she’s receiving. Her compete level is through the roof. She has the effort and energy that can change games. I knew she would not be denied a championship going into that fifth and deciding set,” stated Eric Lemoine, USB’s Associate Director.

The Arts student-athlete at USB was also selected to 2021-22 Women’s Volleyball All-Conference Team and now will prepare as Les Rouges is the first MCAC representative at the WVB Nationals with first serve on Friday, March 25.
