Blazers Timothy Juvonen is the MCAC Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Mar. 6, 2022

The #1 seed Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers completed back-to-back championships after capturing the 2021-22 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) men’s volleyball title over the weekend. Second year setter Timothy Juvonen was instrumental in leading the squad to the championship title during the week ending Mar. 6, 2022.

The Grand Marais, MB native was huge as he controlled the offence throughout the two playoff matches. Juvonen finished the season with 39 assists and two kills in the four set victory over the number two seed Providence University College (PUC) Pilots in the championship final on Sun., Mar. 6. For the semi final match, he added 36 assists along with four kills in a three set sweep over fourth seeded Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges and was also named CMU’s Player of the Match.

Juvonen was named Championship MVP for his effort and enthused after the final point, “We passed better and the team battled through it all today. It is so huge to win and to be first MCAC rep at Nationals as it will be special for us and the league.”

With the conference championship, CMU defends their conference win in 2020 and claims their fourth overall title in program’s history (2017, 2018, 2020, 2022). In addition, the Blazers now advances as the MCAC representative to the 2022 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball National Championship hosted by Cégep Limoilou in Quebec City, QC from March 25-27.

CMU’s head coach Don Dulder stated, “It is so very gratifying to see Tim back playing. He has had injuries that have prevented him from showing his skill set along with COVID-19 for two years now. Tim is a passionate leader as one of our captains who runs a very diversified offense. He has an excellent volleyball mind and contributes extremely well with game planning . He is also an extremely good blocker. He is encouraging to teammates and has a true love of the game.”

The Environmental Studies student-athlete at CMU was also named to 2021-22 Men’s Volleyball All-Conference Team and now will prepare as the Blazers are the first MCAC representative at the MVB Nationals which starts on Friday, March 25.
