PUC Pilots defeat USB Les Rouges by 67-49 in 2022 MCAC Women’s Basketball semi-final and advance to play CMU Blazers

In front of the home town crowd, the #2 seed Providence University College (PUC) Pilots defeated the #3 seed Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges by a 67-49 score on Thursday, March 3, 2022 in the 2022 MCAC Women’s Basketball semi-final.

The host PUC are playing on the friendly court at Niverville Community Resource & Recreation Centre in Niverville, MB and now advance to play #1 seed Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers in the Championship Final on Friday, March 4.

The semi final game turned in the second quarter after USB (0-11 in regular season) took a surprising 12-11 lead after the first ten minutes. The Pilots (5-6 in regular season) then rattle off 15 unanswered points before Les Rouges scored again with just under four minutes left in the second.

PUC’s Player of the Game Trinity Blair commented, “USB came out strong and we did not. We started with defence in the second quarter and that led to our transition in offence.”

By half it was the Pilots with a 37-17 margin and they did not relinquish the lead for the second half as USB could not mount a comeback to overcome the deficit. Regardless, Les Rouges gained experience in their first year back in MCAC action since the 2005-06 season.

USB’s head coach Christian Mouné stated after the semis, “We played hard and it was good to see that the team competed and played their best game of the season tonight. I am very proud of them and their effort.”

Top scorer was USB’s Player of the Game Catherine Marquez with 17 points while playing almost the whole game and Casey Eung-Chang added ten for Les Rouges. Asha Donnelly had 16 points while Blair added 14 points and eight rebounds in 35 minutes of play.

PUC’s head coach Joel Coursey added, “That was playoff basketball and we will be prepared for a good match-up against CMU.”
