Weekend Preview (Feb. 18-20) – 2021-22 MCAC Basketball, Volleyball and Futsal

There is two weeks left in the regular season for the 2021-22 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) basketball and volleyball while futsal resumes with the third and final leg before conference championship.

Women’s basketball:

Feb. 18: Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges host Providence University College (PUC) Pilots – 6 pm CT start NOW CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER

The home side is seeking their first win of the season and both teams played last week with PUC coming away with a 86-38 victory. The Pilots hold a 5-5 record while Les Rouges enter with a 0-10 mark.

Feb. 19: Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers host PUC Pilots – 6 pm CT start

A battle between the top teams as CMU look to continue their perfect season so far. The Blazers hold a 10-0 record and defeated PUC by a 69-48 result on the road on Feb. 4. CMU’s Shirliz Apiyo and Julia Schatkowsky led the MCAC scoring with 14.5 points per game while Asha Donnelly is third at 11.5 ppg.

Men’s basketball:

Feb. 18: USB Les Rouges host PUC Pilots – 8 pm CT start NOW CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER

The home side has a rematch with the Pilots as both teams played last week with PUC coming away with a 79-59 victory. The Pilots hold a 5-5 record while Les Rouges enter with a 1-9 mark and USB registered a 72-20 win over PUC earlier on Jan 28.

Feb. 19: Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers host PUC Pilots – 8 pm CT start

This should be another good match-up as both teams have had great battles through out the season. The last time they met, the Pilots notched a 80-66 win at home on Feb. 4 while the Blazers won 88-65 at home on Dec. 4. CMU’s Isaiah Cole leads the conference with 19.8 ppg. average and PUC’s Bryant Smith is second with 18.1 ppg. CMU has clinched first with a 9-1 record.

Women’s volleyball:

Feb. 19: PUC Pilots host Assiniboine Community College (ACC) Cougars – 12 pm CT start

This is an important afternoon match as the Pilots are tied for second with a 8-6 record while the Cougars are gunning for their first win of this season. The last meeting between the two teams had PUC finish with a 3-0 victory on the road on Jan. 29.

Feb. 19 4 USB Les Rouges host CMU Blazers – 6 pm CT start

The top seeded Les Rouges led MCAC with a 12-2 record and hold number ten spot in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national ranking heading into this weekend play. USB’s first year left side Valeria Gonzalez was recognized as the MCAC Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 13, 2022. The Blazers are in a tie for second with PUC with a 8-6 mark and they would like to continue recent success over USB as CMU defeated them 3-1 at home on Jan. 29.

Men’s volleyball:

Feb. 19: PUC Pilots host ACC Cougars – 1:30 pm CT start

A matinee with ramifications for standing positions. PUC is tied for first with a 10-4 record while ACC is tied for third with a 4-10 mark. The last meeting between the two teams had PUC complete a 3-1 win on the road on Jan. 29.

Feb. 19 4 USB Les Rouges host CMU Blazers – 7:30 pm CT start

CMU has made the CCAA national ranking for the first time as they sit in 13th spot heading into this weekend play. After a big weekend home sweep last week versus PUC, second year setter Timothy Juvonen was named as the MCAC Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 13, 2022.  USB would like to stop the three game winning streak by CMU and avenge their 3-1 loss on the road to the Blazers on Jan. 29. USB is tied for third place at 4-10 and won their last match before this weekend.

Women’s futsal hosted by PUC:

Feb. 20: ACC Cougars vs. USB Rouges – 11 am CT start NOW POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER

Both teams have played two game so far this season as USB holds a perfect 2-0-0 record and first place in standings while ACC is at 0-1-1. Top scorers for Les Rouges are Katryna Mickaniec, Sara Boissonneault and Stéphanie Jones each with two goals apiece. Hannah Yuen leads the way for ACC and also second in MCAC scoring with three goals while three other Cougar players have one goal each.

Feb. 20: Brandon University (BU) Bobcats vs. PUC Pilots – 12:45 pm CT start NOW POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER

Both teams are tied for third in conference standings with identical 1-0-1 records. Brandon played in the first leg while Providence played in the second leg last weekend. Kylie Van De Woestyne and Jorja Hoad are tied for team goal scoring lead with two goals each. Jessica Waytiuk, Chloe Jahn, Paige Heide, Ava Temple all have scored once so far this season.

This is the final match for both teams before the conference championship on March 12-13 hosted by Université de Saint-Boniface. The result will help determine seeding for the championship.

Men’s futsal hosted by USB:

Feb. 20: ACC Cougars vs. USB Rouges – 11 am CT start NOW POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER

Both teams have played two game so far this season as USB with a 1-1-0 record for second place while ACC is at 0-0-2. Top scorers for Les Rouges is Franck Oumar N’Dia with four goals, tied for third in MCAC scoring while Ibrahim Bezzahou has added three goals. ACC’s Anbanaden Moonesony leads the team with one goal.

BU is in third with a 1-0-1 mark while PUC is fourth at 0-2-0 . Brandon played in the first leg while Providence played in the second leg last weekend. Camilo Rodriguez is tied for fourth in league goal scoring with seven while Diego Rodriguez is T-3rd with four tallies. Garreth Rayner is also tied for third with four goals with Johannes Barnes Sean Kirkpatrick each with two apiece.
