In a huge match-up over the weekend, Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers secured two crucial wins to leapfrog back into a tie for first in the 2021-22 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) men’s volleyball standings. Second year setter Timothy Juvonen led the squad to the weekend sweep during the week ending Feb. 13, 2022.
The Grand Marais, MB native ‘quarterbacked’ the Blazers by effectively directing and leading the offence by using all the weapons for CMU in two hard fought wins against previously solo first place Providence University College (PUC) Pilots. On Fri., Feb. 11, Juvonen notched 40 assists, seven digs, three blocks and two kills in a 3-1 win. The next night, CMU battled to another four set victory and he added another 35 assists, two blocks, two kills, one dig and one ace.
CMU are now locked in a tie for first with PUC as both teams hold a 10-4 conference mark with two weekends remaining in the regular season. The Blazers are now on a four game winning streak.
“After a couple of years not playing first due to injury, and now the pandemic, Tim is finally able to get back to playing and showcasing his skills. Tim is a top-notch setter who runs an excellent offense, is a terrific blocker, and is also a strong offensive threat himself, enthused CMU’s head coach Don Dulder. “Tim is a team leader, quarterback of the team who plays with a great deal of passion which motivates and lifts teammates. His play this past weekend led our team to two victories over Providence, giving the team a 10-4 record, good enough for first place in the conference.”
The Environmental Studies student-athlete at CMU has another big weekend ahead as the Blazers face Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges on the road with match time at 7:30 p.m. CT this Saturday, February 19.
