Cougars Carter Beattie is the MCAC Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Dec. 5, 2021

In a back-and-forth contest, the Assiniboine Community College Cougars (ACC) Cougars prevailed in a thrilling five set match to complete the first half of the 2021-22 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) men’s volleyball season. First year left side Carter Beattie continued his strong play during the week ending Dec. 5, 2021.

With only one match in week six, the Cougars halted a five game losing streak with their first road victory of this season. Beattie notched 18 kills, three blocks, three aces plus had an impressive passing average of 2.3 against Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges on Sat., Dec. 4 afternoon.

In the tight MCAC standings, ACC now improves to 3-6 mark for third spot and looks forward to building on this result and performance in January.

“We have been aware that Carter has been the focus of our opponents all season. On Saturday, Carter showed us exactly why that is with him dominant performance on the court,” stated ACC’s head coach Joel Small. “Carter has been working extremely hard at each and every practice to improve his skills and is one of those athletes that works just as hard to ensure his teammates are excelling alongside him. He is a talented individual to coach and I have no doubt that he has a bright future in volleyball ahead of him.

The Cougars rallied from a first set loss and then were pushed to a fifth before closing out the competitive match 15-10. The Kipling, SK native was leaned upon not just at the net but through his serving prowess.

ACC’s assistant coach Brendan White concurred, ”Carter played a key role from the service line this past week as his tough serve was able to put St. B on the back foot in key moments that helped swing the momentum. He also created a large presence at the net on both block and attack allowing us to side out effectively late in the match. His “large” presence on the court helped will the team late in the sets to grind out a win.”

The Land and Water Management student-athlete at ACC takes a holiday volleyball break and next conference match will be on the road as the Cougars travel to play at second place Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers on Friday, January 14 with first serve at 7:30 p.m. CT.
