11 Questions With…Diego Rodriguez, Brandon Bobcats Men’s soccer, 4th year

Brandon University (BU) Bobcats won the MCAC championship this season and are the MCAC representative at the 2021 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Soccer National Championship. BU play Humber Hawks in Quarter-final match on Wed, Nov. 10 at 11 am CT at SAIT.


1. Your goal for this season…And has it changed now?

Answer: The goal was to be able to help the team in whichever way possible and to achieve the highest point possible. The goal is still the same with a lot more motivation now.

2. Thoughts on being part of Nationals this season?

Answer: Is an incredible feeling. A lot of different emotions going on but knowing that the team will give it all we got to represent everyone as well as possible.

3. How difficult was it to return to conference play after year off due to COVID-19?

Answer: The COVID year really changed a lot of things. Being away from the sport for so long only made me realize how much soccer made part of my life and it only made me love it even more.

4. Your greatest soccer moment so far?

Answer: This 2021 championship is definitely my greatest soccer moment. Being able to win with such an amazing group after being off the competitive environment for almost two years due to an injury and COVID to being able to become MCAC champions at home and now going to Nationals for the first time ever. It is definitely an unforgettable time right now.

5. Why did you choose soccer as a sport?

Answer: I am from Colombia and back home is soccer is the main sport. Also my dad has an incredible passion for the sport, which is very contagious and makes me love the sport more and more each day.

6. Who is the joker/fun person on your team?

Answer: There are a few, the team environment is always positive. We all have our fun moments, which is good because whenever one of us needs a little cheering up there is always someone to do it.

7. What are you listening to right now?…pump up music?

Answer: Thanks to the ethnic variety in our team there is a lot of different genres in our playlists from hip-hop, rap to Afro music to Spanish music. We’ve all found a way to enjoy all types of music.

8. Best social media/website to follow?

Answer: Instagram for me is where I get most of the information but Twitter is updated very quickly which allows for quicker results.

9. Favourite TV show and/or movie?

Answer: My favourite movie is “Goal”. A movie that shows that hard work can beat any adversity.

10. Did you have a soccer star that you admired growing up?

Answer: In a personal level, my dad was my soccer star. I’ve always looked up to him and I tried to learn everything he ever taught me. Ronaldinho has also been a soccer player who’s playing style I have always admired.

11. When do you realize this team could do something special and make a championship run this year?

Answer: After a couple of games when the team was able to stay composed and together even after losing. In a soccer environment, everything works smoothly when the team is wining but strong teams stand out when they find a way to stay together and pull each other up when things do not go as planned.
