Bobcats Ryder Anthony is the MCAC Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 17, 2021

With only one point separating the top two teams in the 2021 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) men’s soccer standings, Brandon University (BU) Bobcats kept pace with a couple crucial match results in week six and a standout performance from goalkeeper Ryder Anthony.

The rookie keeper held the fort as he played strong in a 1-1 draw against the #13 CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association) ranked Providence University College (PUC) Pilots on Saturday, Oct. 16 at home and then backed it up with a 3-1 home victory over Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers the next day.

Anthony was asked to be the stopper as the Bobcats played with only ten players from the 16th minute onwards in the battle for first place with PUC to start the weekend. He was called on to make numerous difficult saves and preserved a hard-earned point against their rivals. The Bachelor of Physical Education Studies student then added another strong game with an important win against CMU by again being called on to produce match-stopping saves. He has also been a integral part of BU’s seven game unbeaten streak (six wins and one draw) heading into the last week of regular season.

“Ryder has been very solid and consistent in net for us the past few weeks and our current streak without a loss,“ commented Brandon’s head coach Glen McNabb. “He has a quiet confidence and solid routine for making timely saves and building out from his net to transition to offence.”

Brandon is nationally ranked number 14 and only one point back of Providence with two matches remaining to determine the top seed for the MCAC playoffs.

The Bobcats face Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges on the road this Saturday, October 23 at 3:15 p.m. CT. The following day, BU completes the regular season at Assiniboine Community College (ACC) Cougars, also at 3:15 p.m. CT kickoff.
