What an exciting week for the Providence University College Pilots (PUC) Pilots. Two victories to clinch a playoff berth and stay atop the 2021 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) men’s soccer standings while being led by striker Garreth Rayner.
The rookie from Johannesburg, South Africa had a productive two games as he notched two goals (one a game-winner) and three assists in week four wins on October 2-3.
Rayner has now moved into a tie for second in MCAC goal scoring with six.
The #12 CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association) ranked Pilots defeated Assiniboine Community College Cougars (ACC) Cougars 9-4 on the road to start the weekend with Rayner scoring a goal and two assists in only 45 minutes of playing time.
Joey Passi, Providence head coach, stated, “Garreth has come in and quickly established himself as a impact player who can get goals, create assists and come through when it counts. He’s a gamer. He likes the pressure, he wants the ball, and he’s good at creating stuff. Garreth is not afraid to get stuck in either which helps with our overall team play.”
Rayner followed up with his best game in a 2-1 home win over Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges (USB). He was part of both tallies as he set-up the first goal to tie the match and then scored the game-winner, all while the Pilots was down one man.
“He had a fantastic weekend, and on Sunday against USB he was super clutch with a great assist and a quality goal that came from a beautiful pass from Jai Virk. I expect Garreth to continue delivering like that just as he has all year so far, ” said Passi.
Providence holds a 6-0-1 record for first place in the MCAC standings.
The Business Administration student looks to continue his scoring prowess as PUC has a quick turnaround for week five. They play at Canadian Mennonite University Blazers (CMU) on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 8:15 p.m. CT.
