Blazers Matheus Dos Anjos Aquino is the MCAC Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sept. 26, 2021

There must be something about Brandon that brings out the best out of Canadian Mennonite University Blazers (CMU) rookie Matheus Dos Anjos Aquino. He has scored all of his goals so far during the MCAC men’s soccer season in the Wheat City.

In week three, the striker notched a hat trick to add to his MCAC league leading total of five goals.

The Campo Grande, Brazil native had his second multi-goal match and it proved pivotal as CMU defeated Assiniboine Community College Cougars (ACC) Cougars on the road by a 7-3 margin on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Blazers head coach Anderson Pereira stated “Matheus has been outstanding this season. From day one, he has impressed the entire coaching staff and teammates with his skills, hard work and passion for the game. He is always willing to learn and to help his teammates to improve as well.”

CMU has only scored ten goals so far in 2021 and Aquino has accounted for half of the overall total (5). With the victory, the Blazers now hold a 2-0-2 record for six points and only three points back of a two-way second place tie.

“Matheus is a natural goal scorer and with excellent dribbling skills he can take anyone on a one-on-one and make the defenders’ life really hard,” continued Pereira. “As if that wasn’t enough, he is one of those players that will work hard coming back and help his team on the defensive end as well. We couldn’t be happier to have a player with such talent on our squad this season.”

The Kelvin High school graduate seeks to add to his goal total as CMU starts week four on the road against the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges (USB) on Thursday, Sept. 30 with first kick at 8:15 p.m. CT. The Blazers then host Brandon Bobcats (BU) on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 3:15 p.m. CT.
