Jafet Sandoval is the first Vincent Massey graduate to commit to the Cougars 2021 men’s soccer roster.
Sandoval is originally from Choloma, Honduras and moved to Canada with his parents and sister in December 2010. He relied on support from teachers and fellow classmates to help him overcome the language barrier and acclimatize to Canada. He has already proven successful having recently received honour roll status and a bronze medal in both academics and athletics in his grade 12 year at Vincent Massey High School. The 5’9 center midfielder was also named Most Valuable Player for the Vikings soccer team.
“Jafet has a strong shot and controls the midfield,” said Vikings coach, Nolan Queen. “He is a great player and person.”
“I’m not the fastest or the strongest but I understand the game,” said Sandoval. “I know how to interpret plays and where to be on the field to help a teammate on defence. I know where to pass the ball to hurt the opposite teams defence the most when we are on attack.”
“Jafet is a great playmaker who is able to generate offense for his teammates,” says head coach Chris McLachlan. “He has an accurate shot and is extremely dangerous on free kicks. He is coachable and I’m excited to have him join our program.”
Sandoval is looking forward to meeting teammates and playing against new players and teams. The thought of playing against stronger competition is a challenge he looks forward to and welcomes.
“Soccer is the sport I put all my efforts into getting better and becoming a better player for myself and my teammates,” continues Sandoval. “It brings pride to be a part of a sports team for your school and I’m excited to represent the school in the best way possible.”
Sandoval will be taking the college’s Carpentry & Woodworking program in the fall.
“Humans have always had the skills to build. Being creative on how they build their houses with the resources they have; I want to know how it feels to build something of your own from scratch,” said Sandoval. “The college gives students the chance to work hands on and I’m excited to get started.”
