The 2020-21 MCAC volleyball season is set to start on Nov. 6, 2020 when the PUC Pilots are scheduled to host the USB Les Rouges, with the women serving up at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. The start of the season will depend on the COVID-19 conditions in the province and the MCAC’s decision-making timeline.
“We are using our Return to Play Framework to help guide our decisions regarding the MCAC’s volleyball season,” said Scott Masterson, the MCAC’s president. “Our hope is that conditions will be in place to allow a full schedule for our student-athletes. With the recent announcementby Volleyball Manitoba to move to Phase two of its Return to Play Plan we believe that we will be able to make some positive decisions within the timelines listed in order to offer the opportunity for a full season.”
The MCAC set three dates in their decision-making timeline and contingency plan. A decision will be made by Sept. 25 on if the regular season can start on schedule. This can only happen if all conditions in the MCAC Return to Play Framework are met:
- All Provincial and Municipal Health restrictions around travel can be realisticallyfollowed.
- All Provincial and Municipal Health restrictions around social distancing can be respected in the context of sport participation and competition.
- Provincial Sport Organization’s Return-to-Play phase allows for full sport training and competition.
If a decision isn’t made by Sept. 25, the league will take another look by Oct. 16 to see if the full regular season can take place. The last date on the decision-making timeline is Dec. 4, where if conditions are met, a reduced schedule will begin on Jan. 15, while if conditions are not met, the 2020-21 season will be cancelled.
On Friday, Nov. 6 the PUC Pilots host the USB Les Rouges in the league opener, while the defending men’s and women’s volleyball champions, the CMU Blazers, host the Pilots on Saturday, Nov. 7. The women are scheduled to play both games at 6 p.m., with the men playing at 7:30 p.m.
This season, the women will be serving up their matches first. On Friday’s, most women’s volleyball games will start at 6 p.m., while on the weekend most will start at 2 p.m. The men will follow the women this season, with game times scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and 3:30 p.m. on most weekends.
The PUC Pilots host the CMU Blazers on Friday, Nov. 13 in a rematch of the 2019-20 men’s volleyball championship match, which the Blazers took in a five-set thriller. While on Saturday, Nov. 14 the USB Rouges will host the CMU Blazers in a rematch of the 2019-20 MCAC women’s championship match. The Rouges will look to get revenge after losing in straight sets to the Blazers in that final match.
