Bobcats Blank Les Rouges ; Pilots top Blazers in 2019 Men’s Soccer Semi-final

BU and PUC will meet in the MCAC championship match Sunday

Two second half goals pushed the Brandon University Bobcats past the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges in the MCAC semi-finals.

Both teams played a structured defensive game in the first half, but when there was a scoring chance, both goalies were up to the task.

The Les Rouges generated a high-quality look with an open shot on goal, but Bobcats goalkeeper, William Tonning made a diving stop in the 25th minute of the game.

MCAC league MVP, Derek Mains, was able to shut down Rinor Hoxha, the Bobcats’ leading scorer, for the majority of the game, helping keep the game scoreless at the half.

In the back half of the second frame, Brandon finally broke through. Kevin Lopez crossed a corner kick into the box where Travis Buick won a battle and shot the ball past the Les Rouges goalie.

Hoxha was able to break free for one of the first times in the match and capitalized by scoring an insurance goal in the final minutes of the game.

Travis Buick goal stood as the game winner and he was named Bobcats’ player of the game, while Mains was named top player for the Les Rouges.

Two Giovanni Benitez goals led the Providence University Pilots to a 2-0 win against the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers — last year’s MCAC champions.

The Blazers pressured early. CMU captain, Ryan Jensen, clanged a ball off the crossbar and over the net in the 15th minute of the game.

The Pilots responded with a cross ball into the box, where Benitez slid it past Blazers goalkeeper, Reed Fitzgerald.

PUC held a 1-0 lead at halftime in front of their home fans at the Otterburne Complex.

The Blazers pressured more in the second half. CMU forward, Joel Kisabo received a cross pass from Victor Hugo and tried to sneak the ball past the goalie, but Pilots’ keeper, Justin Hoffmann got his fingertips on the ball and pushed it wide and kept it out of the net.

In the final moments of the game, Benitez won a battle for the ball, creating a breakaway and scoring an insurance goal.

Benitez was named the Pilots’ player of the game, while Jensen won the honour for the Blazers.

BU and PUC will play for championship banner on Sunday at 12 p.m.
