Ashley Paterson is from Cooks Creek, Manitoba and is enrolled in the Child and Youth Care program at Red River College.
The second-year defender has been a big reason for the success of the Rebels backend this season. RRC played three games this week and limited their opponents to a combined six shots on goal.
“Ashley had a tremendous week for us in the centre of our defensive back four,” said Rebels head coach Douglas Lawrie. “She is extremely mobile and able to close down opponents quickly to eliminate attacking threats. She is a strong tackler and an excellent playmaker after winning the ball.”
Lawrie said Paterson has also had to take on a bigger leadership role after a longer-term injury to the team’s captain, Brianne Jamieson.
“She is doing a tremendous job of communicating and keeping our back line organized…,” said Lawrie. “… Ashley has filled the leadership role admirably.”
Paterson’s play contributed to the Rebels three wins this past week, which has moved them to an unbeaten record of 4-1-0 — just three points back of the top-ranked Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges.
The Rebels will look to carry momentum into this weekend’s games when they travel to Brandon to play the Assiniboine Community College Cougars on Saturday, October 5 and the USB Les Rouges on Sunday, October 6.
