Derek Mains scored two goals in USB’s season opener, helping his team to a 3-1 win over the PUC Pilots on Sunday.
“Derek’s skill set is quite impressive, he’s adaptable to many positions on the pitch,” said USB’s athletic director, Eric Lemoine. “He’s a leader with his high level of play and will be key to the success of our squad this season.”
Sunday’s game was Mains first MCAC soccer appearance since early in 2018 after he suffered a meniscal tear while attending a futsal national team tryout with team Canada. Last year’s injury was a big hurdle for the team to overcome.
Mains will look to help the Les Rouge get back into championship form in 2019 after the team narrowly got into the playoffs as the number four seed last season. Last season’s fourth place finish was different for USB, following winning four straight MCAC men’s soccer championships from 2014-17.
The Les Rouges start the 2019 season with a 1-0-0 record and will look to carry momentum into Brandon when they face the ACC Cougars on Saturday and the Brandon Bobcats on Sunday.
