Sam Kinsley named Week 19 Athlete of the Week

Sam Kinsley and the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers Men’s basketball team upset the #1-ranked Red River College Rebels 77-68 last Sunday, winning CMU’s first men’s basketball trophy since 2008. Kinsley was named Most Valuable Player for the Final Four tournament and was a major factor in the championship’s Final when he posted 15 points, 20 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals in 35:22 minutes played.

In the Blazer’s semifinal game against Providence University College on Saturday, Kinsley was used sparingly by Head Coach Billy Isaac playing just under 21 minutes. But the 6’3″ forward from Flin Flon, Manitoba’s Hapnot College Institute still managed to put up a respectable 18 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal in an 88-70 win.

Earlier in the week, Kinsley was also named to the MCAC Men’s Basketball All-Conference team after leading his team in all three major statistical categories this season with 20.3 points, 4.13 assists and 11.9 rebounds per game.

Although the 2016-17 MCAC basketball season has now concluded, Sampson and the Blazers have more work to do before they are able to relax for the off season. As members of the Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Blazers will enter this weekend’s Championship hosted by Oak Hills Christian College as a 4-seed looking for more hardware to add to their mantle. The Blazers start their tournament today at 4 PM against North Dakota’s Cankdeska Cikana Community College.
