Nico Marcon-Lajeunesse named Week 18 Athlete of the Week

“As a veteran and captain of the Les Rouges men’s volleyball team, Nico Marcon-Lajeunesse understands what to do to succeed in the MCAC” says Universite de Saint-Boniface Assistant Coach, Quentin Raval.

Marcon-Lajeunesse racked up 14 kills and 3 blocks in two games against Assiniboine Community College last weekend, helping his Les Rouges secure a playoff spot in the MCAC Final Fours. Les Rouges earned a 3-1 win on Friday, (23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21), and beat ACC in similar 3-1 fashion on Saturday (25-20, 15-25, 25-17, 25-21).

“Nico effectively attacks the ball with strength and accuracy, and does what is needed to ensure his team’s success. His performance this weekend helped the team win two very important games against the Cougars” adds Raval.

Les Rouges find themselves in the middle of a tightly contested Men’s Volleyball field this season, currently sharing 3rd place with University of Winnipeg College who also have a 9-9 record good for 18 total points on the season. USB will see Canadian Mennonite University tomorrow while UWC play Providence the same night. Then on Saturday USB will face UWC which – depending on the outcome of Friday night’s games – could decide which team will play the more favourable 2-vs-3 semifinal matchup on February 25th.

Either way, coach Raval knows he’s got a leader in Marcon-Lajeunesse who will be depended upon in the coming weeks.

“His positive energy, his calm presence on the court and his passion for volleyball will be key factors for the success of the young Les Rouges team in preparation for the MCAC playoffs”.
