Sydney Currell named Week 9 Athlete of the Week

The Red River College women’s volleyball team has benefitted from a new set of hands this season. Rookie setter Sydney Currell helped the Rebels get a split out of their games in Week 9, losing in five sets with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen (25-18, 25-22, 25-22, 26-24, 16-14) on Friday and then bouncing back the following evening to beat the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-17). Currell amassed 62 assists and an impressive 19 digs through both matches.

“Sydney has been an important part of our strong start to the season” says Rebels head coach, Dan McGregor.

The sure hands and strong defence of Currell are a welcome addition after Red River suffered a losing season in 2015. But the Rebels are now 3-2 in conference play and tied for second place in the MCAC, with 11 sets won and 11 sets lost.

“In her rookie season Sydney has taken on a leadership role and has quickly established herself as one of the strongest setters in the conference”, adds McGregor.

Currell joins the Rebels after spending last season with the Westwood Collegiate Warriors in Winnipeg and is in her first year studying Science Labratory Technology at Red River College. She and the Rebels will look to keep improving on their season this weekend when they clash with Assiniboine Community College at home on Friday, November 11th at 6pm.
