Julia Friesen named Week 6 Athlete of the Week

After logging her second hat-trick of the season in a 7-3 win over Providence University College Saturday, Red River College’s 5’7” winger Julia Friesen scored again the following day against Universite de Saint-Boniface to help lift her Rebels to a 3-1 win over Les Rouges. The wins give Red River a 7-1-0 record so far in 2016, and maintains the Rebels’ first-place ranking within the conference.

A rookie winger scoring ten goals in her first season played in the MCAC would be a welcome surprise to any roster. But Friesen, a Nursing student originally from Niverville, already had high expectations from head coach Doug Lawrie coming into the Rebels’ 2016 campaign.

“Julia’s play isn’t a tremendous surprise as she was an MHSAA Rural Championships All-Star twice with the Niverville Panthers.  I have also seen her play in women’s senior club (Winnipeg Women’s Soccer League) several times this year, so I knew what she was bringing to the team”.

Friesen’s four-goal weekend brings her total to ten scored on the season. Having only given up five goals in 2016, the Rebels sport a whopping +17 goal-differential.

“What I am impressed with is her rapid adjustment to the higher calibre soccer in the MCAC than what she had faced before”, says Lawrie.

Friesen and the Rebels head to Brandon this weekend to finish off their season against Assiniboine Community College on Saturday and Brandon University on Sunday. BU held the Rebels to a draw earlier this season and currently sit just two points back from Red River in the MCAC. Friesen will then get her first taste of MCAC postseason play on October 28th when Red River College hosts the 2016 MCAC Final Fours.
