Megan Burns named Week 5 Athlete of the Week

Sitting in third place within the conference, Megan Burns and Les Rouges of the Universite de Saint-Boniface have secured a spot in the 2016 MCAC Soccer Final Fours. In Week 5, Burns scored as Les Rouges prevailed over Providence University College 3-0 and got their 4th win of the season. USB Head Coach Justin Legare says his 5’3″ holding midfielder is “one of the many stars in the MCAC” and that without the play of Burns throughout this season, Les Rouges’ new women’s soccer program could not have been nearly as competitive.

“She is a leader with great knowledge and understanding of the game and shares it with her teammates. A skilled player with a phenomenal work rate and some of the fastest feet in the MCAC, she can get around any player with the ball still glued to her. She is a key player as an attacking threat and does her role defensively as well.”

In Week 5 Les Rouges were short some key players but Alexandrea Berena, Racky Diallo and Burns all scored one apiece and Shawna Poirer got the shutout in goal. The win gives USB a three point cushion over the Pilots in the standings coming into Week 6.

Saint-Boniface heads west tomorrow, Saturday October 18th at 1:00 pm, to take on Brandon University who currently sit atop the MCAC and would meet with Les Rouges in the first round of the win-or-go-home post season should standings remain the same. The last time the two teams met on October 1st, BU won 2-0.
