The Universite de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges were hard-pressed to field a full women’s futsal roster this season, just barely finding enough athletes to compete.
But the men’s and women’s head coach, Justin Legare, says the ground his women’s team has covered in has already exceeded his expectations and Week 17 Athlete of the Week, Megan Burns, is a huge part of that.
“The women’s program is a work in progress and in the building stages, in hopes of competing in the MCAC outdoor soccer season next year. Megan is one of our top offensive threats but has an extreme high work rate and always helps on the defensive side of the field. She has the ability to beat most defenders 1-on-1 and even at times has the confidence and skill to take on two defenders with much success”.
Legare acknowledges more than just Burns’ individual skill, and says her attitude is also part of what makes her a threat.
“Her shot is powerful and accurate and with her ability to create space, that is a deadly combination. She is driven and extremely coach-able, and is getting better after every training session.”
Les Rouges women’s team failed to qualify for this year’s Futsal Championships on March 5th, hosted by Canadian Mennonite University College. But with the dedication and resiliency that Burns leads with in St. B’s program, it won’t be long until Les Rouges are a competitive squad in the MCAC.
