School is once again in session, and although that means it’s back from the lake and into the textbooks, it also means we’re back to the pitch, as athletes gear up for yet another season of MCAC soccer beginning this Sunday, September 7th. If a new season alone doesn’t provide enough excitement, this MCAC season is chock-full of storylines to help make this perhaps the most anticipated soccer season yet.
Last season, soccer fans in Brandon got their first taste of the MCAC, as the Brandon-based Assiniboine Community College Cougars made their debut in the conference. But ACC’s tenure as Brandon’s lone home team will come to a quick end in Week Two, as the newest member of the MCAC, the Brandon University Bobcats, will kick off their season against the Université de Saint-Boniface, and the Providence Pilots.
Not only does BU’s presence bring even more competition to the season, it’s also sure to ignite a hometown rivalry between the Bobcats and Cougars when they face-off throughout the season.
Despite the new crop of competition, the Providence Pilots are looking to make a run at the three-peat, after taking home championships in both the men and women’s leagues in both of the last two seasons. Last season, the women went undefeated, while the men only lost one game to Université de Saint-Boniface.
With more teams in the league, and developing programs throughout the conference, it’s going to be harder than ever for the Pilots to pull off another championship season. However, until someone knocks them off their throne, Providence is still the team to beat.
Whether it’s the emergence of the Université de Saint-Boniface team, the tight rivalry between the Red River College and CMU women’s teams, or the serious developing talents of their men’s squads, the 2014 season should be a competitive one from beginning to end.
A conclusion will come in the Final Four’s in October, but in this case the journey is shaping up to be just as exciting as the result. The season begins this Sunday, so make sure you check the website for scores, schedules, stats, and stories from another season in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference.
