The Providence Pilots did a lot of winning this MCAC season, ultimately leading to their second straight MCAC Championship. Although it is often the goal scorers who get the glory, it would be difficult to ignore that defense did in fact, play a huge part of winning a championship for Providence this season. It is for that reason that Eric Plett, a defensive anchor at Providence, is the Week 8 Athlete of the Week.
Matching up in the finals against an offensive powerhouse like Saint-Boniface certainly had people wondering if the Pilots would be able to come out on top this year. They were facing a lot of talent, and some very creative offensive players who have been lights out over the past five weeks of the regular season. However, Providence played like a championship team, and head coach Martin Ward attributes that to the skill and intelligence of a certain second-year defense.
“Eric played every minute of two very intense games last weekend, because he is the glue that holds the team together,” says Ward. “His skill and game intelligence were the foundation for our wins this weekend.”
That’s high praise from Ward, who has seen a lot of talented players take the pitch over his time as head coach at Providence. But that’s the respect his peers have for Plett, who may not be a top goal scorer, but is certainly a star in his own right in this league.
As another season is in the books, Providence will be making it a priority to see that Plett returns to anchor his team’s defense once again, as the Pilots look for a three-peat in 2014.
Plett is in his second year in the Business Administration program at Providence University College.
