With a packed crowd and a ten-plane flyover, there were high expectations for the Providence Pilots home opener on Saturday against Université de Saint-Boniface. Despite a solid team effort defensively, only one name would appear on the score sheet – and that name was Arvid Neufeld.
In the home-debut of his second season in the MCAC, Neufeld netted a hat-trick on Saturday, providing a significant contribution to the teams 3-0 victory. For head coach Martin Ward, the mid-fielder’s impressive offensive effort is only a sign of things to come.
“He has been the offensive sparkplug of our team so far,” says Ward, citing that including games outside the MCAC, Neufeld has scored seven goals in five games. “I think he has the potential to have a major impact in the league this year.”
Neufeld’s impact is hard to argue, as his four goals in the first three games of the season puts him tied for second in league scoring, despite having played one less game than other teams in the league.
No team has been able to solve Providence early on in the season, and if the whole team is able to build off the offensive output of Arvid Neufeld for the rest of the year, they will prove to be a tough team to beat.
The 22-year-old from Paraguay went to high school in Steinbach, and is now studying business at Providence.
