Taylor Bain named Week 18/19 Athlete of the Week

At the start of the season’s second half, we profiled a Rebels women’s volleyball team who spent the holidays in practice – looking to improve on a subpar 3-5 record.

Fast forward to the end of the season and the Red River College team have won six of seven, made their record 10-6, and finished it all off by upsetting the top seed and defending champion Providence Lady Freemen.

All of this in anticipation of the Volleyball Final 4’s being in their house this weekend.

The Rebels player to watch in the tournament was the biggest asset to her team’s wins in the second half – Taylor Bain. In the five-set Feb. 9 match against Providence, the middle had six kills, two aces, two blocks, and 11 digs. Following that up, she had seven kills and an astounding 21 digs in a four-set win over Saint-Boniface on Feb. 13 to close the season.

Despite the hot streak, the Rebels head into the Volleyball Final 4’s with the #3-seed, and have to knock off established and experienced teams in the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen and the aforementioned Lady Freemen. Even the #4 seed, CMU, can’t be overlooked – with several players on that squad left over from the undefeated 2011-12 season.

The Final 4’s tournament, which certainly promises to be competitive, takes place February 22 and 23 at the Notre Dame Campus of Red River College.

Because there were only two conference games in Week 19, the two weeks have been combined to provide a larger selection pool.
