Coming in with four straight men’s basketball championships, it might not have been a surprise that the Red River Rebels were again a winning team this year.
Running the table at 12-0 – in decisive fashion, no less – could be a bit more of a shocker.
With an 86-80 road win over CMU on Feb. 13, the Rebels head into the postseason with a perfect record. According to head coach Suk Singh, the glue guy all along has been first-year forward Damon Morissette.
“Damon has quietly had an all-star season for us,” said Singh. “A great defender and rebounder, he’s added much-needed toughness to our roster and become our most consistent performer.”
In the win over CMU, Morissette put together an impressive double-double line with 20 points and ten rebounds. On top of that, the Garden City Collegiate grad grabbed four steals and two blocks in the game.
The Rebels now head into the Basketball Final 4’s with the #1 seed, looking to become only the second team in MCAC history to win five straight titles (the Rebels men’s volleyball team won from 2007-11). They’ll have to do it, though, in the house of the #2 seed University of Winnipeg College Wesmen.
Morissette, 6’5”, is studying carpentry.
Because there were only two conference games in Week 19, the two weeks have been combined to provide a larger selection pool.
