Although they beat the five-time defending champions to end last season, it might still have been unfair to say the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen had the number of the prestigious men’s volleyball program at Red River College.
That is, up until they proved they could do it again in Week 9 this season.
Winning a Nov. 4th nail-biter at home in five sets, with two sets going past 25, the College Wesmen beat Red River and assumed first place in the conference. Attacking all night from the outside was second-year Stefan Dirks, who racked up a remarkable 21 kills, three stuff blocks and an ace to power by the young, but touted Rebels.
Dirks, the 20-year-old left side and team captain this season, will look to lead his team to a second straight men’s volleyball title – building their own dynasty after the five years of Rebels domination in the conference.
Studying kinesiology, Dirks is a graduate of Steinbach Regional Secondary School.
