Early last season, Mario Giesbrecht scored three goals in an early 4-0 Providence win. Though he would lead the team in goals in 2011, the Freemen petered off after that, eventually settling for disappointment in the semifinals.
This season, Giesbrecht saved his three goal game for the best time possible.
After a quiet regular season by his standards, the 6’1” forward absolutely exploded in the 2012 Soccer Championships, scoring four of his team’s eight weekend goals on his way to a gold medal and a tournament MVP award.
Three of those goals came in the semifinals against Red River College, the fourth the go-ahead in the finals against Université de Saint-Boniface. That last goal, a soaring free kick from outside the box, proved to be the most memorable in Providence’s run for the championship.
For the Freemen, it was their first title since 2009 as they beat Les Rouges 4-0 in the men’s Soccer Championship.
Giesbrecht is a fourth-year player with Providence and graduated Niverville Collegiate.
