After three regular season draws and a dead even goal total, it was time for a clear winner to emerge in the Route 90 Rivalry between Red River College and Canadian Mennonite University.
The lone women’s soccer semifinal was, as expected, as tight as the last three affairs between the two teams. This time, though Red River was able to get the deciding goal to win 1-0 and advance to the Women’s Championship.
They will play undefeated and top-ranked Providence University College at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21.
A familiar face was behind the goal for the Rebels – midfielder Katrina Clark, who was recently named Athlete of the Week for Week 5. The score came late in the first half, as the Rebels showed defensive prowess to keep CMU off the scoreboard.
In the second half, with strong gusts of wind at their back, CMU dominated possession. Unfortunately, they were unable to get solid goal scoring opportunities all game long, and simply ran out of time in the end.
The Rebels now go into their matchup with Providence having lost the three regular season match-ups, being outscored 9-1. They’re no strangers to surprising people, though, having beaten CMU to win their first match of the year in the Bronze Medal game of 2011.
The 2012 MCAC Soccer Championships take place at Red River College’s Notre Dame Fields. $3 gets you in for one championship match, $5 gets you in for both.
