Past the halfway point of the 2012 soccer season, it didn’t seem like Providence would see much of a battle on their way to the top seed in men’s soccer.
In Week 4, that story line changed with just one goal.
In a Sunday matchup following a game where they gave up 6 goals, four of those to league leader in goals Norvin Campos, Les Rouges of Université de Saint-Boniface collected themselves to beat Providence 1-0 – the one goal coming off the foot of forward Nabil Zahir.
The win has pulled Les Rouges into a tie for second seed with CMU, with just three points separating Providence from the two contenders. Zahir’s goal also keeps things interesting down the stretch as Saint-Boniface and CMU will play each other twice before the Soccer Championships on October 20 and 21.
The first of those match-ups comes on Wednesday, October 10 at Whittier Park.
Zahir, a second-year player with Les Rouges, now has two goals to his name on the year. Originally from Casablanca, Morocco, he is studying in Universitaire 1.
