The University of Winnipeg Wesmen have vacated for the CIS and last year’s runner-up Providence, with talent and determination, are poised to swoop in and return to the league’s top spot.
In their first week, the Lady Freemen got off to a great start behind a strong performance from midfielder Annemarie Kaethler.
A multi-sport athlete and 2011 Athlete of the Week selection, Kaethler scored one of her team’s two goals in a 2-0 opening weekend win over Red River College – a matchup between last year’s silver and bronze medalist teams.
Touted as a player with the ability to beat her defender at any time, this 19-year-old is in her third year with Providence and serves as part of a veteran presence that will be valuable down the stretch of the season.
Kaethler is studying nursing and a masters in engineering and grew up in Steinbach, Manitoba.
