Lady Freemen Upset Undefeated Blazers For Women’s Title

Some might call it déja vu, but for the Providence Lady Freemen, 2012’s Volleyball Championship was anything but the same as 2011’s. Sure, they were again playing the CMU Blazers. And yes, again they came in as underdogs. But on Saturday night, Providence was on their home court and the Blazers posed a much bigger threat. Coming into the game on a 21-game winning streak after losing the volleyball title game in 2011, CMU was poised to ride its fifth-year stars to a well-deserved championship banner. It was the Lady Freemen, though, who won a two-and-a-half hour, grueling five-set game that will certainly go down as the MCAC’s most competitive volleyball matchup of the season. With a raucous home crowd on their side, they took the first two sets before falling quickly in the third and fourth.
