Coming into Week 16, solidifying the #3 seed in the conference and avoiding the deep, talented College Wesmen in the first round of the Final 4‘s was the name of the game for the women’s basketball team at CMU.
Facing the #4 team Providence, with the seed on the line, CMU was pushed to the limit. Thanks to a strong finish from guard Mallory Shack, though, they were able to narrowly defeat the Lady Freemen, walking away with a 68-66 win on Feb. 8.
Shack, a veteran in her fifth year of eligibility, had 19 points on the night, 14 of those coming in the second half.
With the win, CMU moved two games ahead of Providence and has now guaranteed themselves a matchup with the 10-4 Red River Rebels, who will provide a tough test in the first round of the Basketball Final 4’s.
The 5’3” Shack, also a soccer player with CMU, graduated from Transcona Collegiate and is studying international development.
