After a 2010 women’s basketball championship overtime win where she was named Most Valuable Player, there was more excitement in Week 8 for the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen’s second-year forward Julia Anning. With two games against Canadian Mennonite University, Anning and her team won convincingly in their first outing, but needed a comeback in the second. Down 18 to the Blazers at the half, Anning scored 13 points in the second half on her way to a memorable 25 point, three steal night.
“She is one of our team captains and a natural leader on and off the court,” said Wesmen head coach Suki Chhoeun. “Her ability to take risks on defense and to read the next play to get the extra deflection or steal is so valuable to our team.”
The 23-year-old Anning also just wrapped a soccer season where her team won the championship convincingly. She is majoring in criminal justice and went to high school at J.H. Bruns.
